The Science

The NouvoRacine-6™ Complex — our signature six

At Zaviwon, "natural" isn't a marketing word — it's a formula. Our NouvoRacine-6™ complex is six actives, chosen for what they do and how they work together, rooted in Haitian herbal tradition and built on biochemistry. We don't hide them behind "proprietary blends" — we put every one on the label.

The philosophy is simple: science + herbalism + heritage. Every ingredient is here for a reason you can name.

It's a delivery system, not just a list

The six aren't simply combined — they're designed to work as a system. Emu oil is the carrier: its fatty-acid profile is unusually close to human sebum, and its high oleic-acid content is a known penetration enhancer. In plain terms, it helps carry the other five actives deeper into the hair shaft and scalp, where they can actually do something. The other five ride along — the emu rows them in.

Zaviwon means "oar" in Haitian Creole. We row the nutrients in.

The six

1. Haitian Castor Oil — Ricinus communis

  • The science: ~85–90% ricinoleic acid, a rare omega-9 fatty acid that's humectant and soothing to the scalp. Castor oil has been studied for its effect on the look and feel of hair.
  • The heritage: a staple of Haitian hair care for generations, traditionally cold-pressed.
  • What it does: deeply moisturizes; softens the look and feel of coily hair.

2. Emu Oil — Dromiceius

  • The science: a fatty-acid profile that closely mirrors human sebum, rich in oleic acid — a penetration enhancer. That's what makes it our transporter.
  • What it does: carries the other five actives deeper into the hair shaft and scalp. Here on purpose — not hidden.

3. Lemongrass — Cymbopogon citratus

  • The science: high in citral (geranial + neral), naturally astringent and antimicrobial.
  • The heritage: long used to refresh and balance the scalp.
  • What it does: astringent; leaves the scalp feeling clean and balanced.

4. Aloe Vera — Aloe barbadensis

  • The science: polysaccharides (like acemannan), amino acids, and enzymes in a ~99% water gel — a natural humectant that soothes on contact.
  • The heritage: one of the oldest recorded medicinal plants.
  • What it does: hydrates and soothes; calms the feel of a dry, tight scalp. In several of our formulas it's also the base.

5. Slippery Elm — Ulmus rubra

  • The science: rich in mucilage — polysaccharides that form a slick, soothing gel when they meet water. The "slip" is literal.
  • The heritage: a centuries-old soothing remedy in Native American practice.
  • What it does: adds slip to ease detangling and smooth the appearance of coily hair.

6. Neem Oil — Melia azadirachta

  • The science: rich in azadirachtin and fatty acids, studied for supporting a healthy scalp environment; naturally antimicrobial and soothing.
  • The heritage: a cornerstone of Ayurvedic skin and scalp care.
  • What it does: supports a healthy-looking scalp environment.

And alongside the six — Peppermint (Mentha piperita) High in menthol, for a clean, cool, refreshed scalp feel.

Made natural, not synthetic

We keep our formulas clean — and we keep them honest. Water-based products need a preservative to stay safe and mold-free, so we use a paraben-free one, and we tell you. Some functional ingredients (conditioning emulsifiers, a gentle gel for hold, plant-derived cleansers) are processed, not raw — so we say "naturally-based," not "100% natural." Everything is on the label. Nothing hidden. Always.

A clean formula has to stay clean.
